Money problems
“How hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!” Mark 10:24
“Life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Luke 12:15
Why is there poverty in the world?
Jesus said there would always be poverty in the world. But He encouraged the rich to share their wealth with the poor. In a world without sin poverty would not exist, as the rich would supply the needs of the poor. Poverty exists because humankind is selfish and wants to keep what it has for itself.
Jesus was poor. He had no home of His own and depended on the gifts of others yet He gave healing to the sick, lame and blind; something that money could not buy. Most of all He gave His life in place of sinners, suffering the punishment their sins deserved.
Is my poverty a sign of God’s disfavour?
Jesus was poor and God was well pleased with Him. The disciples of Jesus and many godly people in the Bible were poor. Some were rich, but this was not because they were better than others.
It is possible to “trust in riches”, see above, and this can prevent us entering heaven. Those who trust in riches do not trust in God. They feel no need of God and do not prepare to meet Him. If you once trusted in riches and are now poor it could be the greatest blessing of your life. See below.
What comfort has the Gospel got for the poor?
You can be poor and happy if you know where you are going when you die. Some of the richest men in the world are unhappy. There is more to life than possessions, see quotation above. Jesus told a parable about a poor man who died and went to heaven, and a rich man who died and went to hell. Our time in this world is brief, our time in the next is eternal. If wealth keeps us from God, poverty is better than riches!
